Salt and Light

Good morning! Ever wonder why Jesus chose salt and light when he described his disciples in Mathew 5:13-16:

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."

Well like everything in the Bible, I believe Jesus was very deliberate in his analogies, metaphors, etc. So lets take a quick look at the qualities of salt. Everyone knows it is a preservative and flavor enhancer. But did you know, in the past, it was also used as: sanitizer and odor remover, pest repellant, to exfoliate, water conditioner, fire extinguisher, and to remove bitterness from foods. So keeping that in mind I think we can all see how each one of those should be analogous to how we impact the lives of those around us.

So why light? Did you know that the only definition of darkness is the absence of light. We don't walk into a room and turn the dark off, right? When we walk into a dark room, we can't see, not because darkness is present, but light is missing. Light is associated with vision. The world is our mission field and it is dark. We can't allow our vision to be impaired by this world. The world is operating in darkness. They are blind, and we need to bring Light to their darkness. John 8:12 says:

"Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”"

It is up to us to bring salt and light to those around us. I will end as I always do. If you don't know Christ call out to Him today! Acts 16:31 says:

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved."
