Faith Over Fear

Updated: Mar 1, 2023

So I am sure everyone has read the story of David and Goliath detailed in 1 Samuel 17. It is such a famous account that the story is used to describe any lopsided contest. But this weekend, I gained new insight into the story and I walked away with a new perspective. I don’t think this story is about the underdog defeating the champion but about faith overcoming fear.

As we read the account, we see how King Saul stayed in his tent at the rear of the battle lines. We also see the entire Israeli army quaking in fear at every taunt of Goliath. They were battle seasoned troops, but more important they had God on their side. The only one that understood that was David. I found it interesting how David described himself in 1 Samuel 17: 34:

But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father."

As if, he had been a Sheppard years ago. The fact is early that day he had been tending his father’s sheep. But you see, David, because of his faith in God, already projected himself as the winner in this battle. He already gave himself a promotion from lowly Sheppard to Victor. He had no fear, but had a tested faith that was evident in the fact that God had delivered him in the past from the lion and the bear. David went into battle knowing one thing, God was on his side and that was all he needed!

We, as born again believers, have all we need to face any battle. Don’t allow fear to overcome your faith. If you have not surrendered your life to Christ, do it today! 1 John 3:23 says:

"This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ."

Believe on Him today!

In CHRIST Rohn
