Good day or as we say in Papua New Guinea, “Gut de”. It has been a while since I have posted anything. The reason is that I only post when prompted in my spirit. I was inspired by a letter one of our missionaries wrote. She quoted these verses from the Old Testament and related it to an answer to a prayer she had about her future with Ethnos 360 (the mission organization we are currently serving with). Isaiah 40:28-31 says:
"Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint."
These words were written to the House of Jacob no doubt. But, in the greater context it speaks to the character of God, which never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Many of the promises in the Old Testament are specific for Israel, His chosen people, but these promises are also a written testimony to the sovereignty of our God. She definitely grasped the fact that even though the above verses were written for Israel, they also paint a picture of our God’s eternal character.
In today’s Church many are saying the Old Testament is outdated and not relevant for today. That is heresy! The entire Old Testament points to the coming Christ and the character of God.
Then there are some in the Church that try to claim many of the specific blessings that God made to Israel for our nation today. However, they forget to read the verses that describe the curses that will occur because of disobedience.
Let’s do our best to stay out of both of these extremes. God wants everyone to come to a saving grace relationship with His Son Jesus. He blessed us with a beautiful word picture of His grace and mercy. Embrace that today!
